Chasing the Light
In painting, light defines and directs all stages of a composition’s development, from the dividing of shapes to the turning of form. Drama is conveyed with light as well, and also when exaggerated, the effect can be quite profound. I was once told by an artist to “carve with light”. What she meant was to treat your lighter colors as light itself, casting and defining form as the sun does upon a landscape. I always squint a lot whether painting from a still life or in plein air (on location) to simplify the subject I’m looking at. This reduces the lights and darks into fewer groups, bleeds away confusing color variations and eliminates detail. Also experimenting with different painting sufaces helps me to go with the flow. The “Magic Hour”, one half hour before sunset and  one half hour after, casts that special glow on the landscape that’s so fleeting but so special in the  Eastern Shore’s clarified light. I’m still chasing it.

In this show I’ve tried to marry semi abstraction with realism as I want my paintings to be the essence of the scenes rather than an actual depiction.

“ A painting is not a painting when it looks like something” , “a painting is a painting when it feels like something”.  Linda Hall
